Amateur radio is an absorbing and fun hobby that includes self-training in radiocommunications and intercommunication, technical investigations and transmitting news and information related to the operation of amateur stations. Amateur radio offers opportunities for both long distance communication and local contacts.
The CRARC Foundation Qualification Preparation Course covers the core concepts and skills required to pass the Theory and Practical assessments needed to qualify for an Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) recognition certificate (Foundation). This is the minimum qualification needed to apply for a call sign and operate an amateur radio station in Australia.
Unlike other classes of radio licence, it allows responsible building, experimentation and tinkering. Why experiment and investigate? It leads to genuine understanding, not just repetition of what someone else said will work or sticking to the features a manufacturer included.
Once you are qualified and have a call sign, the hobby can be as simple and inexpensive or as complex and time consuming as your interest and resources allow. The call sign is issued for life and many amateurs change their level of involvement as their stage of life and time allows.
What this course covers:
The Course is conducted on both Saturday and Sunday, starting at 8:00am sharp and wrapping up around 5pm on the Saturday and 2:30pm on the Sunday (dependent on candidate numbers).
No prior learning is assumed or required for this course, however a general interest in technology and a grasp of basic high school science will assist in comprehension of the material.
Please note, the Foundation Course is run by volunteers from the Canberra Region Amateur Radio Club who generously give their time. We reserve the right to cancel/postpone the event if attendance does not reach a minimum of four participants.
The Foundation Course closely follows "Your Entry to Amateur Radio" (Foundation Manual). You can purchase the Manual from CRARC for delivery by post ($46) or at the course ($31) from the CRARC website: https://www.crarc.org.au/education/ This does not need to be studied prior to the course, but can be invaluable during and after the course as a reference.

Assessment

At the conclusion of the course, accredited assessors will supervise and mark the Theory / Regulation 25 question multiple choice exam which has a pass mark of 70%. A 20 element practical assessment will be conducted one-to-one with each candidate. The pass mark for the practical assessment is 100%. Results will be given to you immediately after the assessment.
If you pass both elements of the assessment, candidates can apply to ACMA for a recognition certificate and call sign at a one-off cost of around $100. You cannot legally transmit on amateur frequencies until ACMA has issued you with your call sign.
If you want to sit the exams but do not wish to attend the course, please contact us via the CRARC website Get Your Qualification! – CRARC to discuss options - this includes options for people requiring specific assistance to complete the assessment. There is no cost for this service.
